Similarity and Modeling in Science and Engineering

Similarity and Modeling in Science and Engineering

The present text sets itself in relief to other titles on the subject in that it addresses the means and methodologies versus a narrow specific-task oriented approach. Concepts and their developments which evolved to meet the changing needs of applications are addressed. This approach provides the reader with a general tool-box to apply to their specific needs. Two important tools are presented: dimensional analysis and the similarity analysis methods. The fundamental point of view, enabling one to sort all models, is that of information flux between a model and an original expressed by the similarity and abstraction Each chapter includes original examples and applications. In this respect, the models can be divided into several groups. The following models are dealt with separately by chapter; mathematical and physical models, physical analogues, deterministic, stochastic, and cybernetic computer models. The mathematical models are divided into asymptotic and phenomenological models. The phenomenological models, which can also be called experimental, are usually the result of an experiment on an complex object or process. The variable dimensionless quantities contain information about the real state of boundary conditions, parameter (non-linearity) changes, and other factors. With satisfactory measurement accuracy and experimental strategy, such models are highly credible and can be used, for example in control systems.

Settlement Calculation on High-Rise Buildings

Settlement Calculation on High-Rise Buildings

‘Settlement Calculation on High-Rise Buildings: Theory and Application’ discusses, for the first time, the latest developments in settlement calculation theory and case studies including analysis and research results for more than thirty high-rise buildings with a height of 100m-420m. Rigorously reviewed, this book provides a number of useful methods and a unique practical perspective on settlement calculation of high-rise buildings. It covers soft soil constitutive model and computation parameters, the theory of soil stress and strain, and new methods of settlement calculation in super long pile and space-varying rigidity group piles, box(raft), pile-box(raft), diaphragm wall-pile-box(raft) and rock foundation on high-rise buildings. This book is a useful design and construction resource for scientists and engineers, as well as for professionals in structural mechanics and geotechnical engineering. Professor Xiangfu Chen is chairman of the Academic Commission of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), chief engineer of China Construction Beijing Design and Research Institute, and a Doctoral Tutor at Tongji University Shanghai.

Geometric Programming for Design and Cost Optimization

Geometric Programming for Design and Cost Optimization

Geometric programming is used for design and cost optimization, the development of generalized design relationships, cost ratios for specific problems, and profit maximization. The early pioneers of the process – Zener, Duffin, Peterson, Beightler, Wilde, and Phillips — played important roles in the development of geometric programming. There are three major areas: 1) Introduction, History, and Theoretical Fundamentals, 2) Applications with Zero Degrees of Difficulty, and 3) Applications with Positive Degrees of Difficulty. The primal-dual relationships are used to illustrate how to determine the primal variables from the dual solution and how to determine additional dual equations when the degrees of difficulty are positive. A new technique for determining additional equations for the dual, Dimensional Analysis, is demonstrated. The various solution techniques of the constrained derivative approach, the condensation of terms, and dimensional analysis are illustrated with example problems. The goal of this work is to have readers develop more case studies to further the application of this exciting tool.Table of Contents: Introduction / Brief History of Geometric Programming / Theoretical Considerations / The Optimal Box Design Case Study / Trash Can Case Study / The Open Cargo Shipping Box Case Study / Metal Casting Cylindrical Riser Case Study / Inventory Model Case Study / Process Furnace Design Case Study / Gas Transmission Pipeline Case Study / Profit Maximization Case Study / Material Removal/Metal Cutting Economics Case Study / Journal Bearing Design Case Study / Metal Casting Hemispherical Top Cylindrical Side Riser\Case Study / Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Cylinders Case Study / Material Removal/Metal Cutting Economics with Two Constraints / The Open Cargo Shipping Box with Skids / Profit Maximization Considering Decreasing Cost Functions of Inventory Policy / Summary and Future Directions / Thesis and Dissertations on Geometric Programming

Mathematics for the Physical Sciences

Mathematics for the Physical Sciences

This book is intended to provide a bridge from courses in general physics to the intermediate -level courses in classical mechanics, electrodynamics and quantum mechanics. It begins with a short review of some topics in physics that are then used throughout the book to provide the physical contexts for the mathematical methods that are developed: electrostatics, electric currents, magnetic flux, simple harmonic motion, and the rigid rotor. The next chapters treat vector algebra and vector calculus; the concept of magnetic flux serves to give physical meaning to the integral theorems. A short chapter on complex numbers provides the needed background for the remainder of the text. Ordinary differential equations arise in may physical contexts; the simple harmonic oscillator serves as the illustrative example. Examples from both classical and quantum physics illustrate the chapters on partial differential equations and eigenvalue problems: the quantum harmonic oscillator and a particle in a box, a conducting sphere in a uniform field and a vibrating drum head. The eigenvalue problem leads naturally to a discussion of orthogonal functions, which again use the quantum harmonic oscillator to provide the physical insight, and to matrices, where coupled oscillators and the principal axes of a rotating rigid body provide the physical context. The text concludes with a brief discussion of variational methods and the Euler-Lagrange equation. Problems at the end of each chapter give the student experience in applying mathematical methods to the solution of physical problems. Illustrative exercises throughout provide guidance. Many of the exercises call for graphical representations, and some are particularly amenable to the use of numerical methods.

Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0

Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0

This book begins with you working along as Scott Guthrie builds a complete , , reference application. He begins NerdDinner by using the File->New , menu command within Visual Studio to create a new ASP.NET MVC Application. You’ll then incrementally add functionality and features. Along the way you’ll cover how to create a database, build a model layer with business rule validations, implement listing/details data browsing, provide CRUD (Create, Update, Delete) data form entry support, implement efficient data paging, reuse UI using master pages and partials, secure the application using authentication and authorization, use AJAX to deliver dynamic updates and interactive map support, and implement automated unit testing.,

From there, the bulk of the rest of the book begins with the basic concepts around the model view controller pattern, including the little history and the state of the MVC on the web today. We’ll then go into the ways that MVC is different from ASP.NET Web Forms. We’ll explore the structure of a standard MVC application and see what you get out of the box. Next we dig deep into routing and see the role URLs play in your application. We’ll deep dive into controllers and views and see what role the Ajax plays in your applications. The last third of the book focuses entirely on advanced techniques and extending the framework.
