The Catalyzing Mind

The Catalyzing Mind

How do we understand and explain phenomena in psychology? What does the concept of causality mean when we discuss higher psychological functions and behavior? Is it possible to generate laws in a psychological and behavioral sciencelaws that go beyond statistical regularities, frequencies, and probabilities? An international group of authors compare and contrast the use of a causal model in psychology with a newer modelthe catalytic model. The Catalyzing Mind: Beyond Models of Causality proposes an approach to the qualitative nature of psychological phenomena that focuses on the psychological significance and meaning of conditions, contexts, and situations as well as their sign-mediating processes. Contributors develop, apply, and criticize the notion of a catalyzing mind in hopes of achieving conceptual clarity and rigor. Disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, semiotics and biosemiotics are used for an interdisciplinary approach to the book. Research topics such as history and national identity, immigration, and transitions to adulthood are all brought into a dialogue with the concept of the catalyzing mind. With a variety of disciplines, theoretical concepts, and research topics this book is a collective effort at an approach to move beyond models of causality for explaining and understanding psychological phenomena.

Multi-Step Enzyme Catalysis

Multi-Step Enzyme Catalysis

The first comprehensive coverage of this unique and interdisciplinary field provides a complete overview, covering such topics as chemoenzymatic synthesis, microbial production of DNA building blocks, asymmetric transformations by coupled enzymes and much more. By combining enzymatic and synthetic organic steps, the use of multi-enzyme complexes and other techniques opens the door to reactions hitherto unknown, making this monograph of great interest to biochemists, organic chemists, and chemists working with/on organometallics, as well as catalytic chemists, biotechnologists, and those working in the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries.

Biocatalysis - From Discovery to Application

Biocatalysis - From Discovery to Application

Catalytic procedures are clearly the most economical means to effect selective processes in organic synthesis. For the preparation of enantiomerically pure compounds, the utilization of enzymes is particularly attractive because of high selectivities and mild, environmentally benign reaction conditions. Taking advantage of advances in molecular biology, unique new enzymes are now readily accessible in quantity with properties that are amenable to modification on demand. This volume brings together leading contributors from the forefront of this exciting technology. In their authoritative and timely rewies they cover the state-of-the-art of biocatalysis from the discovery of novel enzymes – by modern screening, evolutionary or immunological approaches – through immobilization techniques for technical processes, to their use in the asymmetric synthesis of important target compounds. Thus, several chapters illustrate the synthetic potential of recently emerging biocatalysts in the phospholipid, epoxide, cyanohydrin, and oligosaccharide fields.

Tetrahedral Frameworks of Zeolites, Clathrates and Related Materials

Tetrahedral Frameworks of Zeolites, Clathrates and Related Materials

Zeolites and zeolite-like became important because of their ion exchange capacities and their outstanding catalytic properties. Millions of tons of zeolites have been produced in the past years for the oil refining industry alone and, in even greater quantities, as ion-exchanging softening agents for detergents. Numerous other applications, e.g. in environmental protection, farming, gas separation, medicine, and pharmacy, are known, making zeolites almost a necessity of daily life. Consequently, there are many, research activities dealing with zeolites properties and characterization. However, a strictly systematic description of zeolite-type crystal structures was not available but is now presented in this series of volumes. It is designed as a reference work for zeolite chemists and materials scientists, but it also serves as a tool to interpret structural similarities and to derive new structures from known topologies.

Thermal and Catalytic Processes in Petroleum Refining

Thermal and Catalytic Processes in Petroleum Refining

This text examines the thermal and catalytic processes involved in the refining of petroleum including visbreaking, coking, pyrolysis, catalytic cracking, oligomerization, alkylation, hydrofining, hydroisomerization, hydrocracking, and catalytic reforming. It analyzes the thermodynamics, reaction mechanisms, and kinetics of each process, as well as the effects of operating conditions and reactor design on process performance and product quality. This is a valuable resource for chemists who wish to improve their knowledge of some of the real world issues that must be addressed in hydrocarbon conversion. Topics include processes on metallic catalysts, processes using bifunctional catalysts, and catalytic reforming.
