Fundamentals of X Programming

Fundamentals of X Programming

This book provides an overview of the X Window System, focusing on characteristics that have significant impact on the development of both application programs and widgets. The X is the dominant window system under Unix, and X servers are available for Microsoft Windows, thus enabling graphics over a network in the PC world. Special attention to applications that go beyond graphical user interfaces (GUIs), such as visualization and imaging programs; issues affecting video games; and designing widgets with a complex appearance. While the book does not assume previous knowledge of X, it is intended for experienced programmers, especially those who want to write programs that go beyond simple GUIs.

Disorders of Fat and Cellulite

Disorders of Fat and Cellulite

Alterations in the amount of subcutaneous fat lead to significant changes in appearance, whether from excess (as seen in bodily obesity) or in loss of fat (as seen in facial lipodystrophy associated with the aging process). Disorders of Fat and Cellulite: Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment incorporates the current knowledge of the physiology of fat with the numerous treatment modalities available today. This unique and illustrated source is an important review and reference source for any practitioner dealing with the cosmetic treatment of adipose tissue and cellulite. Fat disorders — particularly of cellulite and of lipodystrophy — are of great interest to all involved in cosmetic dermatology worldwide. Providing an overview of the current state of knowledge of the pathophysiology involved, this text explores the most up-to-date approaches to treatment, including medical, surgical, and cosmetic options.

Visual Texture

Visual Texture

This book surveys the state of the art in multidimensional, physically-correct visual texture modeling. Features: reviews the entire process of texture synthesis, including material appearance representation, measurement, analysis, compression, modeling, editing, visualization, and perceptual evaluation; explains the derivation of the most common representations of visual texture, discussing their properties, advantages, and limitations; describes a range of techniques for the measurement of visual texture, including BRDF, SVBRDF, BTF and BSSRDF; investigates the visualization of textural information, from texture mapping and mip-mapping to illumination- and view-dependent data interpolation; examines techniques for perceptual validation and analysis, covering both standard pixel-wise similarity measures and also methods of visual psychophysics; reviews the applications of visual textures, from visual scene analysis in medical applications, to high-quality visualizations in the automotive industry.

Motion History Images for Action Recognition and Understanding

Motion History Images for Action Recognition and Understanding

Human action analysis and recognition is a relatively mature field, yet one which is often not well understood by students and researchers. The large number of possible variations in human motion and appearance, camera viewpoint, and environment, present considerable challenges. Some important and common problems remain unsolved by the computer vision community. However, many valuable approaches have been proposed over the past decade, including the motion history image (MHI) method. This method has received significant attention, as it offers greater robustness and performance than other techniques. This work presents a comprehensive review of these state-of-the-art approaches and their applications, with a particular focus on the MHI method and its variants.

The Bees of the World

The Bees of the World

In this extensive update of his definitive reference, Charles D. Michener reveals a diverse fauna that numbers more than 17,000 species and ranges from the common honeybee to rare bees that feed on the pollen of a single type of plant. With many new facts, reclassifications, and revisions, the second edition of The Bees of the World provides the most comprehensive treatment of the 1,200 genera and subgenera of the Apiformes. Included are hundreds of updated citations to work published since the appearance of the first edition and a new set of plates of fossil bees.

A History of Organized Labor in Peru and Ecuador

A History of Organized Labor in Peru and Ecuador

This volume traces the history of organized labor in Peru and Ecuador from its first appearance in the late nineteenth century until the end of the twentieth century. It discusses the relations of trade unionism with economic development and politics, particularly the political tendencies within organized labor. It also discusses the negative impact on the trade union movement of the free enterprise-free trade policies of the last decades of the twentieth century.

From Quantum Cohomology to Integrable Systems

From Quantum Cohomology to Integrable Systems

Quantum cohomology has its origins in symplectic geometry and algebraic geometry, but is deeply related to differential equations and integrable systems. This text explains what is behind the extraordinary success of quantum cohomology, leading to its connections with many existing areas of mathematics as well as its appearance in new areas such as mirror symmetry. Certain kinds of differential equations (or D-modules) provide the key links between quantum cohomology and traditional mathematics; these links are the main focus of the book, and quantum cohomology and other integrable PDEs such as the KdV equation and the harmonic map equation are discussed within this unified framework. Aimed at graduate students in mathematics who want to learn about quantum cohomology in a broad context, and theoretical physicists who are interested in the mathematical setting, the text assumes basic familiarity with differential equations and cohomology.

Mathematical Feynman Path Integrals and their Applications

Mathematical Feynman Path Integrals and their Applications

Although more than 60 years have passed since their first appearance, Feynman path integrals have yet to lose their fascination and luster. They are not only a formidable instrument of theoretical physics, but also a mathematical challenge; in fact, several mathematicians in the last 40 years have devoted their efforts to the rigorous mathematical definition of Feynman’s ideas.
