Fundamentals of X Programming

Fundamentals of X Programming

This book provides an overview of the X Window System, focusing on characteristics that have significant impact on the development of both application programs and widgets. The X is the dominant window system under Unix, and X servers are available for Microsoft Windows, thus enabling graphics over a network in the PC world. Special attention to applications that go beyond graphical user interfaces (GUIs), such as visualization and imaging programs; issues affecting video games; and designing widgets with a complex appearance. While the book does not assume previous knowledge of X, it is intended for experienced programmers, especially those who want to write programs that go beyond simple GUIs.

Heterogeneous Multicore Processor Technologies for Embedded Systems

Heterogeneous Multicore Processor Technologies for Embedded Systems

To satisfy the higher requirements of digitally converged embedded systems, this book describes heterogeneous multicore technology that uses various kinds of low-power embedded processor cores on a single chip. With this technology, heterogeneous parallelism can be implemented on an SoC, and greater flexibility and superior performance per watt can then be achieved. This book defines the heterogeneous multicore architecture and explains in detail several embedded processor cores including CPU cores and special-purpose processor cores that achieve highly arithmetic-level parallelism. The authors developed three multicore chips (called RP-1, RP-2, and RP-X) according to the defined architecture with the introduced processor cores. The chip implementations, software environments, and applications running on the chips are also explained in the book.Provides readers an overview and practical discussion of heterogeneous multicore technologies from both a hardware and software point of view;Discusses a new, high-performance and energy efficient approach to designing SoCs for digitally converged, embedded systems;Covers hardware issues such as architecture and chip implementation, as well as software issues such as compilers, operating systems, and application programs;Describes three chips developed according to the defined heterogeneous multicore architecture, including chip implementations, software environments, and working applications

Information Routing, Correspondence Finding and Object Recognition in the Brain

Information Routing, Correspondence Finding and Object Recognition in the Brain

This book covers recent research on cortical signal processing and plasticity, with an emphasis on object recognition. The focus is on assemblies of neurons and how they can collectively represent information patterns and their dynamic relationships – leading to novel concepts for how the brain routes information in a purposeful way, how it detects correspondences between patterns, and how sensory inputs are recognized. Furthermore the question which neural substrates are necessary for such capabilities, and how they can self-organize in the developing organism are treated. The readership is aimed at all students and researchers in neuroscience interested in exploring new paradigms of brain function. Experimentalists may draw inspiration from the book for designing anatomical and physiological experiments that lead the way from the current focus on static receptive fields to investigating the dynamic, functional connectivity of cortex. Theoreticians are invited to incorporate the discussed concepts into their own modeling, and to improve on the models presented in the book.

Managing Multimedia Semantics

Managing Multimedia Semantics

Managing multimedia semantics is a complex task because content creators and archivists describe and interpret semantics associated with the multimedia content in several ways, depending on the context and use of the information. Disciplines such as computer vision and pattern recognition, multimedia database management and modeling, and film theory and semiotics have contributed ideas, theories and techniques for managing multimedia semantics. Managing Multimedia Semantics effectively ties together current approaches and future trends in managing multimedia semantics. In one comprehensive volume, this book assembles research problems, theoretical frameworks, tools and technologies required for designing multimedia information systems. Managing Multimedia Semantics is aimed at researchers and practitioners involved in designing and managing complex multimedia information systems. It also serves as a reference text for graduate students taking a course in designing multimedia information systems.

Wave Forces on Offshore Structures

Wave Forces on Offshore Structures

A thorough understanding of the interaction of waves and currents with offshore structures has now become a vital factor in the safe and economical design of various offshore technologies. There has been a significant increase in the research efforts to meet this need. Although considerable progress has been made in the offshore industry and in the understanding of the interaction of waves, currents, and wind with ocean structures, most of the available books concentrate only on practical applications without a grounding in the physics. This text strives to integrate an understanding of the physics of ocean-structure interactions with numerous applications. This more complete understanding will allow the engineer and designer to solve problems heretofore not encountered, and to design new and innovative structures. The intent of this book is to serve the needs of future generations of engineers designing more sophisticated structures at ever increasing depths.
