The Art and Elegance of Beadweaving

The Art and Elegance of Beadweaving

A leader in the field shares her infectious enthusiasm for the art of off-loom beadweaving, leading you through all the basics and then on to more challenging techniques and projects. Admire the beautiful color photos and detailed diagrams and use them to learn every stitch needed to make beaded jewelry, clothing, lampshades, belts, and pillows. Begin with the beads themselves, perhaps decorating purchased varieties to personalize them. Weave with chevron chain; crochet; herringbone and peyote stitches; and spiral rope. The dramatic and unique projects include a Graduated Triangle Drop Necklace, Putting Together Earrings, Three-Bead Spiral Bracelet, Twisted ribbon Ndebele necklace, Gemstone Rope, Napkin Rings, and many more. Plus – the secret to developing your own creative variations on each theme.

Analysis, Geometry and Topology of Elliptic Operators

Analysis, Geometry and Topology of Elliptic Operators

Modern theory of elliptic operators, or simply elliptic theory, has been shaped by the Atiyah?Singer Index Theorem created 40 years ago. Reviewing elliptic theory over a broad range, 32 leading scientists from 14 different countries present recent developments in topology; heat kernel techniques; spectral invariants and cutting and pasting; noncommutative geometry; and theoretical particle, string and membrane physics, and Hamiltonian dynamics. The first of its kind, this volume is ideally suited to graduate students and researchers interested in careful expositions of newly-evolved achievements and perspectives in elliptic theory. The contributions are based on lectures presented at a workshop acknowledging Krzysztof P Wojciechowski’s work in the theory of elliptic operators.

Originally published as the Continuum Companion to Historical Linguistics, this book brings together a number of leading scholars who provide a combination of different approaches to current and new issues in historical linguistics, while supplying an exhaustive and up-to-date coverage of sub-fields traditionally regarded as central to historical linguistics research. The editors aim to build a solid background for further discussion and to indicate directions for new research on relevant open questions.

A Concise History of Chinese Literature

A Concise History of Chinese Literature

A history of Chinese literature from its early beginnings through the end of the Qing dynasty, this recent work from Professor Luo Yuming of China s Fudan University seeks to provide, by adopting new theoretical perspectives and using updated research, a coherent, panoramic description of the development of Chinese literature and its major characteristics. As one of the very few English translations of such works by Chinese authors it seeks to inform the Western audience of the recent viewpoints and scholarship on the topic from a leading Chinese scholar. It may also provide some grounds of comparison and contrast with equivalent works in the West.

Information Routing, Correspondence Finding and Object Recognition in the Brain

Information Routing, Correspondence Finding and Object Recognition in the Brain

This book covers recent research on cortical signal processing and plasticity, with an emphasis on object recognition. The focus is on assemblies of neurons and how they can collectively represent information patterns and their dynamic relationships – leading to novel concepts for how the brain routes information in a purposeful way, how it detects correspondences between patterns, and how sensory inputs are recognized. Furthermore the question which neural substrates are necessary for such capabilities, and how they can self-organize in the developing organism are treated. The readership is aimed at all students and researchers in neuroscience interested in exploring new paradigms of brain function. Experimentalists may draw inspiration from the book for designing anatomical and physiological experiments that lead the way from the current focus on static receptive fields to investigating the dynamic, functional connectivity of cortex. Theoreticians are invited to incorporate the discussed concepts into their own modeling, and to improve on the models presented in the book.
