Biomechanics of the Gravid Human Uterus
The complexity of human uterine function and regulation is one of the great wonders of nature and represents a daunting challenge to unravel. This book is dedicated to the biomechanical modeling of the gravid human uterus and gives an example of the application of the mechanics of solids and the theory of soft shells to explore medical problems of labor and delivery. After a brief overview of the anatomy, physiology and biomechanics of the uterus, the authors focus mainly on electromechanical wave processes, their origin, dynamics, and neuroendocrine and pharmacological modulations. In the last chapter applications, pitfalls and problems related to modeling and computer simulations of the pregnant uterus and pelvic floor structures are discussed. A collection of exercises is added at the end of each chapter to help readers with self-evaluation. The book serves as an invaluable source of information for researchers, instructors and advanced undergraduate and graduate students interested in systems biology, applied mathematics and biomedical engineering.

Biomedical Informatics - Fourth Edition
The practice of modern medicine and biomedical research requires sophisticated information technologies with which to manage patient information, plan diagnostic procedures, interpret laboratory results, and carry out investigations. Biomedical Informatics provides both a conceptual framework and a practical inspiration for this swiftly emerging scientific discipline at the intersection of computer science, decision science, information science, cognitive science, and biomedicine. Now revised and in its third edition, this text meets the growing demand by practitioners, researchers, and students for a comprehensive introduction to key topics in the field. Authored by leaders in medical informatics and extensively tested in their courses, the chapters in this volume constitute an effective textbook for students of medical informatics and its areas of application. The book is also a useful reference work for individual readers needing to understand the role that computers can play in the provision of clinical services and the pursuit of biological questions. The volume is organized so as first to explain basic concepts and then to illustrate them with specific systems and technologies.

Plastics in Dentistry and Estrogenicity
This book provides a timely and comprehensive review of our current knowledge of BPA release from dental polymers and the potential endocrinological consequences. After a review of the history and evolution of the issue within the broader biomedical context, the estrogenicity of BPA is explained. The basic chemistry of the polymers used in dentistry is then presented in a simplified and clinically relevant manner. Key chapters in the book carefully evaluate the release of BPA from polycarbonate products and composite resins and the estrogenicity of these materials. Currently available evidence on the potential estrogenic action of dental composities, sealants, and adhesives is presented, and means are suggested by which adverse health effects can be minimized. The entire dental community will find this book to be an excellent source of information on the true risks posed by BPA, and an invaluable aid to safe practice.

Partial Differential Equation Analysis in Biomedical Engineering
Aimed at graduates and researchers, and requiring only a basic knowledge of multi-variable calculus, this introduction to computer-based partial differential equation (PDE) modeling provides readers with the practical methods necessary to develop and use PDE mathematical models in biomedical engineering. Taking an applied approach, rather than using abstract mathematics, the reader is instructed through six biomedical example applications, each example characterized by step-by-step discussions of established numerical methods and implemented in reliable computer routines. Adopting this technique, the reader will understand how PDE models are formulated, implemented and tested. Supported by a set of rigorously tested general purpose PDE routines online, and with enhanced understanding through animations, this book will be ideal for anyone faced with interpreting large experimental data sets that need to be analyzed with PDE models in biomedical engineering.

The Therapeutic Use of Ayahuasca
This book presents a series of perspectives on the therapeutic potential of the ritual and clinical use of the Amazonian hallucinogenic brew ayahuasca in the treatment and management of various diseases and ailments, especially its role in psychological well-being and substance dependence. Biomedical and anthropological data on the use of ayahuasca for treating depression, PTSD, and substance dependence in different settings, such as indigenous contexts, neo-shamanic rituals, contemporary therapeutic circles, and in ayahuasca religions, in both South and North America, are presented and critiqued. Though multiple anecdotal reports on the therapeutic use of ayahuasca exist, there has been no systematic and dense reflection on the topic thus far. The book brings the therapeutic use of ayahuasca to a new level of public examination and academic debate. The texts in this volume stimulate discussion on methodological, ethical, and political aspects of research and will enhance the development of this emergent field of studies.
Nanomaterials
The enabling science in much of nanotechnology today is the science of nanomaterials; indeed in the broadest sense, nanotechnology would not be possible without nanomaterials. Nanomaterials: Mechanics and Mechanisms seeks to provide an entr into the field for mechanical engineers, material scientists, chemical and biomedical engineers and physicists. The objective is to provide the reader with the connections needed to understand the intense activity in the area of the mechanics of nanomaterials, and to develop ways of thinking about these new materials that could be useful to both research and application. The book covers all of the fundamentals of the mechanical properties of materials in a highly readable style, and integrates most of the literature on the emerging field of nanomaterials into a coherent body of knowledge. This volume provides a basic understanding of mechanics and materials, and specifically nanomaterials and nanomechanics, in one self-contained text. Graduate and advanced undergraduate students will find well-organized chapters that provide the necessary background in mechanics, mechanical properties and modeling. The writing style illustrates concepts through quantitative modeling techniques, in contrast to theoretical abstractions of materials behavior. Problem sets within each chapter aim to motivate discussion and further study in this rich and bourgeoning field. Providing engineers with the knowledge necessary to take full advantage of the tremendous potential of nanomaterials, Nanomaterials: Mechanics and Mechanisms is a valuable teaching/learning tool for mechanical engineering, physics and materials science audiences.
