Mathematics and Art

Mathematics and Art

Recent progress in research, teaching and communication has arisen from the use of new tools in visualization. To be fruitful, visualization needs precision and beauty. This book is a source of mathematical illustrations by mathematicians as well as artists. It offers examples in many basic mathematical fields including polyhedra theory, group theory, solving polynomial equations, dynamical systems and differential topology. For a long time, arts, architecture, music and painting have been the source of new developments in mathematics. And vice versa, artists have often found new techniques, themes and inspiration within mathematics. Here, while mathematicians provide mathematical tools for the analysis of musical creations, the contributions from sculptors emphasize the role of mathematics in their work. This book emphasizes and renews the deep relation between Mathematics and Art. The Forum Discussion suggests to develop a deeper interpenetration between these two cultural fields, notably in the teaching of both Mathematics and Art.

Green Architecture

Green Architecture

ARCHITECTURAL STRUCTURE & DESIGN. When is a house ecological? Does the use of natural materials and solar cells on the roof make a building an example of ‘green’ architecture? Perhaps even Antoni Gaudi and Frank Lloyd Wright designed ‘greener’ buildings than most contemporary architects, whose low-energy houses scarcely differ outwardly from traditional ones.James Wines puts up the various – and often irreconcilable – concepts of environmentally-friendly architecture for discussion, making a case for an architecture that not only focuses on technological solutions, but also tries to reconcile man and nature in its formal idiom. Among the examples of contemporary ecological architecture presented are works by Emilio Ambasz, Gustav Peichl, Arthur Quarmby, Jean Nouvel, Sim Van der Ryn, Jourda and Perraudin, Log ID, James Cutler, Stanley Saitowitz, Francois Roche, Nigel Coates and Michael Sorkin.

Heterogeneous Multicore Processor Technologies for Embedded Systems

Heterogeneous Multicore Processor Technologies for Embedded Systems

To satisfy the higher requirements of digitally converged embedded systems, this book describes heterogeneous multicore technology that uses various kinds of low-power embedded processor cores on a single chip. With this technology, heterogeneous parallelism can be implemented on an SoC, and greater flexibility and superior performance per watt can then be achieved. This book defines the heterogeneous multicore architecture and explains in detail several embedded processor cores including CPU cores and special-purpose processor cores that achieve highly arithmetic-level parallelism. The authors developed three multicore chips (called RP-1, RP-2, and RP-X) according to the defined architecture with the introduced processor cores. The chip implementations, software environments, and applications running on the chips are also explained in the book.Provides readers an overview and practical discussion of heterogeneous multicore technologies from both a hardware and software point of view;Discusses a new, high-performance and energy efficient approach to designing SoCs for digitally converged, embedded systems;Covers hardware issues such as architecture and chip implementation, as well as software issues such as compilers, operating systems, and application programs;Describes three chips developed according to the defined heterogeneous multicore architecture, including chip implementations, software environments, and working applications

Liquid Crystalline and Mesomorphic Polymers

Liquid Crystalline and Mesomorphic Polymers

With contributions by internationally renowned researchers, this book provides a comprehensive overview of recent developments in a new class of liquid-crystalline compounds. The book begins with discussions of the theoretical aspects of cholesteric phase formation in polymers. The next part discusses recent work on polymers with mesogenic side groups (their molecular architecture, phase behavior, and dynamics in external fields, as well as their properties in mixtures with low-mass liquid crystals). The final group of chapters deals with mesomorphic systems that do not contain mesomorphic groups (for example, derivatives of polyorganophosphasenes, cellulose, and graphitizable carbons), as well as polymer-dispersed liquid-crystal films (which have important practical applications), and the new and exotic bowl-shaped liquid-crystal materials. Interdisciplinary in its approach, the book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in polymer science, liquid-crystal research, and materials science.
