Recently the interest in Bohm realist interpretation of quantum mechanics has grown. The important advantage of this approach lies in the possibility to introduce non-locality ab initio, and not as an unexpected host. In this book the authors give a detailed analysis of quantum potential, the non-locality term and its role in quantum cosmology and information. The different approaches to the quantum potential are analysed, starting from the original attempt to introduce a realism of particles trajectories (influenced by de Broglie’s pilot wave) to the recent dynamic interpretation provided by Goldstein, Durr, Tumulka and Zangh, and the geometrodynamic picture, with suggestion about quantum gravity. Finally we focus on the algebraic reading of Hiley and Birbeck school, that analyse the meaning of the non-local structure of the world, bringing important consequences for the space, time and information concepts.

Philosophical Faith and the Future of Humanity
Karl Jaspers, who died in 1969, had a profound impact on 20th-century theology and philosophy. His central thesis called for, among other things, a de-centering of philosophy from its Eurocentric roots and a renewal of its dialogue with other traditions, especially Asian ones. This collection of essays includes unpublished work by Jaspers himself as well as testimonies to his life and career by colleagues, associates, and translators, some of who knew Jaspers personally. Readers will also find commentary and interpretation by researchers who have explored Jaspers work for decades, and a biographical account of Jaspers student Leonard Ehrlich, who handled much of Jaspers English translation.
Chaos
This eleventh volume in the Poincar Seminar Series presents an interdisciplinary perspective on the concept of Time, which poses some of the most challenging questions in science. Five articles, written by the Fields medalist C. Villani, the two outstanding theoretical physicists T. Damour and C. Jarzynski, the leading experimentalist C. Salomon, and the famous philosopher of science H. Price, describe recent developments related to the mathematical, physical, experimental, and philosophical facets of this fascinating concept. These articles are also highly pedagogical, as befits their origin in lectures to a broad scientific audience. Highlights include a description of the manifold fundamental physical issues in play with time, in particular with the changes of perspective implied by Special and General Relativity; a mathematically precise discussion of irreversibility and entropy in the context of Boltzmann’s and Vlasov’s equations; a thorough survey of the recently developed thermodynamics at the nanoscale, the scale most relevant to biological physics; a description of the new cold atom space clock PHARAO to be installed in 2015 onboard the International Space Station, which will allow a test of Einstein’s gravitational shift with a record precision of 2 10-6, and enable a test of the stability over time of the fundamental constants of physics, an issue first raised by Dirac in 1937; and last, but not least, a logical and clarifying philosophical discussion of Time’s arrow, a phrase first coined by Eddington in 1928 in a challenge to physics to resolve the puzzle of the time-asymmetry of our universe, and echoed here in a short pome en prose by C. de Mitry. This book should be of broad general interest to physicists, mathematicians, and philosophers.

The Reception of Oscar Wilde in Europe
Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) is now widely recognised not only as one of the most representative figures of the British fin de sicle, but as one of the most influential Anglophone authors of the nineteenth century. In Britain Wilde suffered a long period of comparative neglect following the scandal of his conviction for gross indecency’ in 1895; and it is only recently that his works have been reassessed. But while Wilde was subjected to silence in Britain, he became a European phenomenon. His famous dandyism, his witticisms, paradoxes and provocations became the object of imitation and parody; his controversial aesthetic doctrines were a strong influence not only on decadent writers, but also on the development of symbolist and modernist cultures.

Demenageries
Demenageries, Thinking (of) Animals after Derrida is a collection of essays on animality following Jacques Derridas work. The Western philosophical tradition separated animals from men by excluding the former from everything that was considered proper to man: laughing, suffering, mourning, and above all, thinking. The animal has traditionally been considered the absolute Other of humans. This radical otherness has served as the rationale for the domination, exploitation and slaughter of animals. What Derrida called la pense de lanimal (which means both thinking concerning the animal and animal thinking) may help us understand differently such apparently human features as language, thought and writing. It may also help us think anew about such highly philosophical concerns as differences, otherness, the end(s) of history and the world at large. Thanks to the ethical and epistemological crisis of Western humanism, animality has become an almost fashionable topic. However, Demenageries is the first collection to take Derridas thinking on animal thinking as a starting point, a way of reflecting not only on animals but starting from them, in order to address a variety of issues from a vast range of theoretical perspectives: philosophy, literature, cultural theory, anthropology, ethics, politics, religion, feminism, postcolonialism and, of course, posthumanism.

The Unfinished System of Nonknowledge
A deft reconstruction of what Georges Bataille envisioned as a continuation of his work La Somme Athologique, this volume brings together the writings of one of the foremost French thinkers of the twentieth century on the central topic of his oeuvre. Gathering Batailles most intimate writings, these essays, aphorisms, notes, and lectures on nonknowledge, sovereignty, and sacrifice clarify and extend Batailles radical theology, his philosophy of history, and his ecstatic method of meditation. Following Batailles lead, as laid out in his notebooks, editor Stuart Kendall assembles the fragments that Bataille anticipated collecting for his summa. Kendalls introduction offers a clear picture of the authors overall project, its historical and biographical context, and the place of these works within it. The ‘system’ that emerges from these articles, notes, and lectures is ‘atheology,’ understood as a study of the effects of nonknowledge. At the other side of realism, Batailles writing in La Somme pushes language to its silent end. And yet, writing toward the ruin of language, in search of words that slip from their meanings, Bataille uses languageand the discourses of theology, philosophy, and literatureagainst itself to return us to ourselves, endlessly. The system against systems is in fact systematic, using systems and depending on discourses to achieve its own endsthe end of systematic thought.A medievalist librarian by training, Georges Bataille (18971962) was active in the French intellectual scene from the 1920s through the 1950s. He founded the journal Critique and was a member of the Acphale group and the Collge de Sociologie. Among his works available in English are Visions of Excess (Minnesota, 1985), Tears of Eros (1989), and Erotism (1990).

The De-Mathematisation of Logic
This book collects together several articles by the author, to which a certain recent RATIO paper of his relates, with that paper as an introduction to the whole. It displays a major failure in the disposition of the logicians who have followed on from Frege, principally through their attachment to mathematics, and their subsequent neglect of natural language, and its basic grammar. Thus these logicians as a whole have confused, in substantial ways, categories like use with mention, identity with equivalence, predicates with functions, predicates with their nominalisations, sentences with nominals, sentences with propositions, propositions with functions, propositions with sets, properties with states of affairs, direct speech with indirect speech, reference with description, objects with facts, pronouns with nouns, mereological sums with (mathematical) sets, numbers with sets, count terms with mass terms, amounts with numbers, and also units of measure with objects, amongst other things. The book consists in fourteen chapters, with eleven of them being as they have been, or will be, when published in central journals, and other collections. Two further chapters extend the work in another two published papers, while one chapter is quite new. The chapter titles are: ‘Logic and Grammar’, ‘Completing Russell’s Logic’, ‘Logic and Arithmetic’, ‘Natural Language Sets’, ‘Namely Riders: an Update’, ‘Concept and Object in Frege’, ‘Frege’s Hidden Assumption’, ‘A Poor Concept Script’, ‘Motivation by De Se Beliefs’, ‘Out of the Liar Tangle’, ‘Ramseying Liars’, ‘Proving that 2+3=5′, ‘Harmonising Natural Deduction’, and ‘Dialetheias are Mental Confusions’.

Spinoza
Continuum’s Guides for the Perplexed are clear, concise and accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that students and readers can find especially challenging. Concentrating specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to fathom, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding material. Benedict de Spinoza is a major philosopher of enduring influence and importance, whose work is encountered by all serious students of Western philosophy; his Ethics is one of the seminal works of moral, religious and political thought. Nevertheless, Spinoza is a considerable challenge for the modern student; his language, rooted in the vocabulary of late medieval scholasticism is frequently opaque, while the esoteric themes explored in his work often require elucidation. Spinoza: A Guide for the Perplexed provides that elucidation, offering a thorough account and analysis of Spinoza’s key works and overall philosophical project. The text equips the reader with the necessary means to draw full and clear understanding from Spinoza’s often inaccessible language and complex philosophical system and method. His Ethics and political treatises are covered in detail; Spinoza’s ‘geometrical’ approach to his subject is opened up, and his obscure terminology fully explained. The book concludes with a valuable assessment of Spinoza’s enduring influence and his relevance for contemporary philosophical debates and concerns. It is an excellent support resource for anyone trying to get to grips with this challenging and important philosopher.

Context and the Attitudes Meaning in Context, Volume 1
Context and the Attitudes collects thirteen seminal essays by Mark Richard on semantics and propositional attitudes. These essays develop a nuanced account of the semantics and pragmatics of our talk about such attitudes, an account on which in saying what someone thinks, we offer our words as a ‘translation’ or representation of the way the target of our talk represents the world. A broad range of topics in philosophical semantics and the philosophy of mind are discussed in detail, including: contextual sensitivity; pretense and semantics; negative existentials; fictional discourse; the nature of quantification; the role of Fregean sense in semantics; ‘direct reference’ semantics; de re belief and the contingent a priori; belief de se; intensional transitives; the cognitive role of tense; and the prospects for giving a semantics for the attitudes without recourse to properties or possible worlds. Richard’s extensive, newly written introduction gives an overview of the essays. The introduction also discusses attitudes realized by dispositions and other non-linguistic cognitive structures, as well as the debate between those who think that mental and linguistic content is structured like the sentences that express it, and those who see content as essentially unstructured.
