There are many examples of cooperation in Nature: cells cooperate to form tissues, organs cooperate to form living organisms, and individuals cooperate to raise their offspring or to hunt. However, why cooperation emerges and survives in hostile environments, when defecting would be a much more profitable short-term strategy, is a question that still remains open. During the past few years, several explanations have been proposed, including kin and group selection, punishment and reputation mechanisms, or network reciprocity. This last one will be the center of the present study. The thesis explores the interface between the underlying structure of a given population and the outcome of the cooperative dynamics taking place on top of it, (namely, the Prisoner’s Dilemma Game). The first part of this work analyzes the case of a static system, where the pattern of connections is fixed, so it does not evolve over time. The second part develops two models for growing topologies, where the growth and the dynamics are entangled.

Morphological Aspects of Inner Ear Disease
Sudden deafness and Meniere’s Disease are common inner ear diseases diagnosed around the globe. However, their causes and etiologies are still unknown due to several reasons. One key factor is simply that the inner ear is small and located in the hard temporal bo the resolution of CT and MRI images is insufficient in analyzing the pathophysiology of the inner ears under such circumstances. As these diseases are not fatal, the opportunities of obtaining temporal bones for histopathological examinations are rather rare. This book tries to improve the situation by approaching the inner ear diseases, especially the perilymphatic fistula, from multifaceted perspectives. It provides morphological information of the inner ear accompanying the chapters, i.e., explanations of inner ear fluids and blood vessels that help readers get familiar with complicated inner ear structures. It contains chapters describing specific diseases such as sudden deafness, Meniere’s Disease and viral diseases to understand them in depth. Animal models of the diseases described in the book also help readers better understand inner ear diseases that normally remain obscure. Patients with intractable vertigo of inner-ear origin need surgical treatment and an application of a laser to the vestibular labyrinth is another topic of interest to readers, for lasers allow a precise treatment. Various examples of experiments are also provided in the book to give readers an idea of surgical applications. This book is recommended as a professional reference text and monograph for all doctors and trainees in the otolaryngology field focusing on the ear, nose and throat.

Understanding Statistics in the Behavioral Sciences, Ninth Edition
Based on over 30 years of successful teaching experience in this course, Robert Pagano’s introductory text takes an intuitive, concepts-based approach to descriptive and inferential statistics. He uses the sign test to introduce inferential statistics, empirically derived sampling distributions, many visual aids and lots of interesting examples to promote student understanding. One of the hallmarks of this text is the positive feedback from students-even students who are not mathematically inclined praise the text for its clarity, detailed presentation, and use of humor to help make concepts accessible and memorable. Thorough explanations precede the introduction of every formula-and the exercises that immediately follow include a step-by-step model that lets students compare their work against fully solved examples. This combination makes the text perfect for students taking their first statistics course in psychology or other social and behavioral sciences.

Mathematics
This is a concise introductory textbook for a one semester course in the history and philosophy of mathematics. It is written for mathematics majors, philosophy students, history of science students and secondary school mathematics teachers. The only prerequisite is a solid command of pre-calculus mathematics. It is shorter than the standard textbooks in that area and thus more accessible to students who have trouble coping with vast amounts of reading. Furthermore, there are many detailed explanations of the important mathematical procedures actually used by famous mathematicians, giving more mathematically talented students a greater opportunity to learn the history and philosophy by way of problem solving. Several important philosophical topics are pursued throughout the text, giving the student an opportunity to come to a full and consistent knowledge of their development. These topics include infinity, the nature of motion, and Platonism. This book offers, in fewer pages, a deep penetration into the key mathematical and philosophical aspects of the history of mathematics.

Analog Integrated Circuits for Communication
Analog Integrated Circuits for Communication: Principles, Simulation and Design, Second Edition covers the analysis and design of nonlinear analog integrated circuits that form the basis of present-day communication systems. Both bipolar and MOS transistor circuits are analyzed and several numerical examples are used to illustrate the analysis and design techniques developed in this book. Especially unique to this work is the tight coupling between the first-order circuit analysis and circuit simulation results. Extensive use has been made of the public domain circuit simulator Spice, to verify the results of first-order analyses, and for detailed simulations with complex device models. Highlights of the new edition include: A new introductory chapter that provides a brief review of communication systems, transistor models, and distortion generation and simulation. Addition of new material on MOSFET mixers, compression and intercept points, matching networks. Revisions of text and explanations where necessary to reflect the new organization of the book Spice input files for all the circuit examples that are available to the reader from a website. Problem sets at the end of each chapter to reinforce and apply the subject matter. An instructors solutions manual is available on the book’s webpage at springer.com. Analog Integrated Circuits for Communication: Principles, Simulation and Design, Second Edition is for readers who have completed an introductory course in analog circuits and are familiar with basic analysis techniques as well as with the operating principles of semiconductor devices. This book also serves as a useful reference for practicing engineers.

Functional Grammar in the ESL Classroom
The book introduces six general procedures for teaching grammar to learners of English as a second language. The procedures are designed to encourage learners to notice, explore and practice grammar in context. Each description and discussion of a procedure is followed by two sample lesson plans together with sample texts and worksheets. Teachers can either use these ‘as is’ or adapt them for their own students. The lessons are suitable for a wide range of students from beginning learners to advanced learners. A final chapter provides examples of lessons in which several procedures are combined. In addition, before each sample lesson plan, the grammar focus of the lesson is briefly explained for the teacher. These procedures all illustrate how grammar can be taught through texts, and they are based on an understanding of the latest research on pedagogical grammar and the role of language awareness and discovery in second language learning and provide teachers with principles they can apply in developing their own teaching materials and activities. The grammar explanations preceding each teaching plan provide a fresh look at English grammar drawing on work in systemic functional linguistics.
