Material Designs and New Physical Properties in MX- and MMX-Chain Compounds

Material Designs and New Physical Properties in MX- and MMX-Chain Compounds

This is the first book to comprehensively address the recent developments in both the experimental and theoretical aspects of quasi-one-dimensional halogen-bridged mono- (MX) and binuclear metal (MMX) chain complexes of Pt, Pd and Ni. These complexes have one-dimensional electronic structures, which cause the various physical properties as well as electronic structures. In most MX-chain complexes, the Pt and Pd units are in M(II)-M(IV) mixed valence or charge density wave (CDW) states due to electron-phonon interactions, and Ni compounds are in Ni(III) averaged valence or Mott-Hubbard states due to the on-site Coulomb repulsion. More recently, Pd(III) Mott-Hubbard (MH) states have been realized in the ground state by using the chemical pressure. Pt and Pd chain complexes undergo photo-induced phase transitions from CDW to MH or metal states, and Ni chain complexes undergo photo-induced phase transitions from MH to metal states. Ni chain complexes with strong electron correlations show tremendous third-order optical nonlinearity and nonlinear electrical conductivities. They can be explained theoretically by using the extended Peierls-Hubbard model. For MMX-chain complexes, averaged valence, CDW, charge polarization, and alternating charge polarization states have been realized by using chemical modification and external stimuli, such as temperature, photo-irradiation, pressure, and water vapor. All of the electronic structures and phase transitions can be explained theoretically.

Vortex, Molecular Spin and Nanovorticity

Vortex, Molecular Spin and Nanovorticity

The subject of this book is the physics of vortices. A detailed analysis of the dynamics of vortices will be presented. The important topics of vorticity and molecular spin will be dealt with, including the electromagnetic analogy and quantization in superfluids. The effect of molecular spin on the dynamics of molecular nano-confined fluids using the extended Navier-Stokes equations will also be covered especially important to the theory and applicability of nanofluidics and associated devices. The nanoscale boundary layer and nanoscale vortex core are regions of intense vorticity (molecular spin). It will be shown, based on molecular kinetic theory and thermodynamics, that the macroscopic (solid body) rotation must be accompanied by internal rotation of the molecules. Electric polarization of the internal molecular rotations about the local rotation axis the Barnett effect occurs. In such a spin aligned system, major changes in the physical properties of the fluid result.

A Vision of Modern Science

A Vision of Modern Science

Ursula DeYoung examines a pivotal moment in the history of science through the career and cultural impact of the Victorian physicist John Tyndall, one of the leading figures of his time and a participant in many highly publicized debates that extended well beyond the purely scientific realm. This book argues that as a researcher, public lecturer, and scientific popularizer, Tyndall had a sizable impact on the establishment of the scientist as an authoritative figure in British culture. As a promoter of science in education and one of the foremost advocates of freeing scientific study from the restraints of theology, Tyndall was both a celebrated and a notorious figure, who influenced areas of Victorian society from governmental policy to educational reform to the debates over Darwin’s theory of natural selection. In contextualizing Tyndall’s varying fields of research and involvement, DeYoung explores many different aspects of nineteenth-century culture, including the development of public science, the role of popular media, and the growth of university research. It engages with the latest scholarship on Victorian culture and the history of science while at the same time exploring the reasons for Tyndall’s heretofore neglected reputation. This book aims to establish John Tyndall as an important and influential figure of the Victorian period whose scientific discoveries and philosophy of science in society are still relevant today.

Fault Diagnosis and Fault-Tolerant Control Strategies for Non-Linear Systems

Fault Diagnosis and Fault-Tolerant Control Strategies for Non-Linear Systems

This book presents selected fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control strategies for non-linear systems in a unified framework. In particular, starting from advanced state estimation strategies up to modern soft computing, the discrete-time description of the system is employed Part I of the book presents original research results regarding state estimation and neural networks for robust fault diagnosis. Part II is devoted to the presentation of integrated fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant systems. It starts with a general fault-tolerant control framework, which is then extended by introducing robustness with respect to various uncertainties. Finally, it is shown how to implement the proposed framework for fuzzy systems described by the well-known TakagiSugeno models.

Inborn Metabolic Diseases - Fifth Edition

Inborn Metabolic Diseases - Fifth Edition

This henceforth classical textbook has become indispensable for those in the front line dealing with metabolic disorders. As with previous editions the book is aimed at all those involved with this specialty including pediatricians, biochemists, dieticians, neurologists, internists, geneticists, psychologists, nurses, and social workers. This 4th edition has been thoroughly updated and revised and John Walter has joined the three other editors. One new chapter on Neonatal screening by tandem MS/MS has been added and several new groups of disorders have been included; for example defects involving the pentose phosphate pathway (polyols metabolism) and disorders of glucose transport. The first chapter presents the clinical approach to inherited metabolic disease using many algorithms and tables and has been entirely revised and extended to include adult metabolic medicine. It now incorporates many new findings particularly in neuroradiology and neurophysiology and emphasises those disorders for which treatment is available. This accessible and practical book can be used either by going directly to the relevant chapter when the diagnosis is already suspected or by referring to Chapter 1 if it is unknown. Despite the numerous updates the book has been maintained at a reasonable size and is published as a single volume of approximately 550 pages divided into 43 Chapters.

Multiagent Scheduling

Multiagent Scheduling

Scheduling theory has received a growing interest since its origins in the second half of the 20th century. Developed initially for the study of scheduling problems with a single objective, the theory has been recently extended to problems involving multiple criteria. However, this extension has still left a gap between the classical multi-criteria approaches and some real-life problems in which not all jobs contribute to the evaluation of each criterion.

The W3 Algebra

The W3 Algebra

‘W’ algebras are nonlinear generalizations of Lie algebras that arise in the context of two-dimensional conformal field theories when one explores higher-spin extensions of the Virasoro algebra. They provide the underlying symmetry algebra of certain string generalizations which allow the extended world sheet gravity. This book presents such gravity theories, concentrating on the algebra of physical operators determined from an analysis of the corresponding BRST cohomology. It develops the representation theory of ‘W’ algebras needed to extend the standard techniques which were so successful in treating linear algebras. For certain strings corresponding to ‘W’N gravity we show that the operator cohomology has a natural geometric model. This result suggests new directions for the study of ‘W’ geometry.

Plasmonics

Plasmonics

This book deals with all aspects of plasmonics, basics, applications and advanced developments. Plasmonics is an emerging field of research dedicated to the resonant interaction of light with metals. The light/matter interaction is strongly enhanced at a nanometer scale which sparks a keen interest of a wide scientific community and offers promising applications in pharmacology, solar energy, nanocircuitry or also light sources. The major breakthroughs of this field of research originate from the recent advances in nanotechnology, imaging and numerical modelling. The book is divided into three main parts: extended surface plasmons polaritons propagating on metallic surfaces, surface plasmons localized on metallic particles, imaging and nanofabrication techniques. The reader will find in the book: Principles and recent advances of plasmonics, a complete description of the physics of surface plasmons, a historical survey with emphasize on the emblematic topic of Wood’s anomaly, an overview of modern applications of molecular plasmonics and an extensive description of imaging and fabrications techniques.

Higher Recursion Theory

Higher Recursion Theory

Hyperarithmetic theory is the first step beyond classical recursion theory. It is the primary source of ideas and examples in higher recursion theory. It is also a crossroad for several areas of mathematical logic: in set theory it is an initial segment of Godel’s L; in model theory, the least admissible set after ; in descriptive set theory, the setting for effective arguments. In this book, hyperarithmetic theory is developed at length and used to lift classical recursion theory from integers to recursive ordinals (metarecursion). Two further liftings are then made, first ordinals ( -recursion) and then to sets (E-recursion). Techniques such as finite and infinite injury, forcing and fine structure and extended and combined Dynamic and syntactical methods are contrasted. Several notions of reducibility and computation are compared. Post’s problem is answere affirmatively in all three settings. This long-awaited volume of the -series will be a ‘Must’ for all working in the field.

Supersymmetric Solitons

Supersymmetric Solitons

This book summarizes major advances in critical solitons in supersymmetric theories, and their implications for understanding basic dynamical regularities of nonsupersymmetric theories. After an extended introduction on the theory of critical solitons, including a historical introduction, the authors focus on three topics: non-Abelian strings and confined monopoles; reducing the level of supersymmetry; and domain walls as D brane prototypes. They also provide a thorough review of issues at the cutting edge, such as non-Abelian flux tubes. The book presents an extensive summary of the current literature so researchers in this field can understand the background and related issues.

Complex Automated Negotiations

Complex Automated Negotiations

Complex Automated Negotiations are a widely studied, emerging area in the field of Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems. In general, automated negotiations can be complex, since there are a lot of factors that characterize such negotiations. For this book, we solicited papers on all aspects of such complex automated negotiations, which are studied in the field of Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems. This book includes two parts, which are Part I: Agent-based Complex Automated Negotiations and Part II: Automated Negotiation Agents Competition. Each chapter in Part I is an extended version of ACAN 2011 papers after peer reviews by three PC members. Part II includes ANAC 2011 (The Second Automated Negotiating Agents Competition), in which automated agents who have different negotiation strategies and implemented by different developers are automatically negotiate in the several negotiation domains. ANAC is an international competition in which automated negotiation strategies, submitted by a number of universities and research institutes across the world, are evaluated in a tournament style. The purpose of the competition is to steer the research in the area of bilateral multi-issue, closed negotiation. This book includes rules, results, agents and domains descriptions for ANAC2011 submitted by organizers and finalists.
